Audience Avatar Template
Build a profile of your ideal viewer or reader, detailed enough to write hooks that land. This is the template I used with smaller YouTubers in competitive niches, plus a walkthrough of where to find the information.

Before you start: there are factors to consider before creating an audience avatar, and they decide which information you collect. This is the most detailed version I use. Some people prefer a simpler avatar with less information, but I like going into the details. Modify or simplify it to fit your needs.
What should demographics contain?
Demographics are the basic facts about your target audience. They help you understand who they are, so you can make your message more focused and personal. An ideal audience avatar contains:
- Age or generation
- Gender
- Location (country, city, urban vs rural)
- Education level
- Occupation
- Income
How to find demographic information
When I started out, I could easily find audience avatar templates, but one question went mostly unanswered: where do I even start? Here are simple ways to find your audience’s demographics.
1. Look at creators similar to you
Study the followers, comments and audience behaviour of YouTubers or influencers in your niche.
2. Check public platforms
Use Reddit, Quora or Facebook Groups to see what people in your niche are asking, sharing and struggling with.
3. Use online reports and stats
Search for free market research, demographic reports or Google’s Think with Google to understand trends.
4. Use AnswerThePublic or YouTube autocomplete
These show what your potential audience is actively searching for, which hints at their interests and needs.
5. Start with a guess, then refine
Imagine your ideal viewer: their age, job and where they hang out online. This first version will evolve as you create and get feedback.
The most important thing here is to start. Even if you can’t access much information, even if you don’t know how, even if you get it wrong. You won’t know how deep the water is until you dive in.
What should psychographics contain?
Psychographics are the deeper traits that tell you why someone thinks and acts a certain way. They go beyond demographics to capture motivations, habits and mindset, which tells you what to say and what not to say:
- Lifestyle and daily activities: what do they spend time doing?
- Interests and hobbies: what do they enjoy or search for?
- Values and beliefs: what matters to them?
- Goals and motivations: what do they want?
- Pain points: what problems are they facing?
How to find psychographic information
If you’re a new creator, or working for one, you can still build a realistic psychographic profile.
1. Explore similar creator communities
Read comments and discussions on YouTube channels, Reddit or forums in your niche. Which interests, problems and goals keep coming up?
2. Join and observe groups
Spend time in Facebook Groups, Discord servers or subreddits where your audience hangs out. Note their common values, opinions and language.
3. Use search tools
AnswerThePublic and YouTube autocomplete reveal what your future audience is curious about, which feeds your understanding of their interests and pain points.
4. Create an estimated avatar
Sketch an ideal persona: how they think, what they love, what frustrates them and what motivates them. It will evolve over time.
5. Refine as you grow
Once you start publishing, pay attention to comments, surveys and engagement that reveal real psychographic data.
A note on AI
There are more ways to gather this information than I’ve listed, but these are the simplest. AI keeps improving and will create more precise personas over time.
Still, there’s a difference between how you understand someone’s pain points and how AI does it. Going through someone’s story helps you understand them, and maybe even help them. Getting their pain points precisely right helps you solve a real problem and sell them your product or service.

Keep building your strategy.
